World Day of Prayer + International Women’s Day

Second Thursday of Every Month
by : Anne Leonard

The regular Thursday night prayer evening at Our Lady’s Missionaries, 8th of March was a celebration of “World Day of Prayer 2007”. This is an ecumenical service which connects people around the world as they come together to pray. This year’s prayer was written by the women of Paraguay with the theme of “United under God’s Tent”. Through this service with prayers and readings, we learned a bit of the beauty, the struggles, the courage and the pain of Paraguay. This plus our own exchange of thoughts and prayers reminded us of the concerns of women around the world, especially in the places where olm’s are present. We hope to all be united under God’s tent one day.

Anne Leonard is a dear and long time friend of OLM’s who assists us in our finance office and in many other ways. We are grateful to Anne and to all who assist us by volunteering their services. They really help a lot!!!!

Our Lady’s Missionaries marked International Women’s Day on March 8, 2007, with a reflection night that included the OLMs’ friends and associates.

Worldwide, the day itself was commemorated by various women’s organizations, as well as individuals. Our Lady’s Missionaries adopted the prayer for the World Day of Prayer on March 5. This prayer was prepared this year by the women of Paraguay, who took their turn in writing reflections about being women in their country at this time in history. These reflections they shared with the women of the rest of the world.

At the OLM prayer evening, guided by these reflections, each participant took part in reading and reflecting on the Paraguayan women’s experiences – of poverty, of being looked upon as the weaker and therefore less important sex, of being the cornerstone of family life and yet being regarded as lesser individuals.

The participants of the OLM reflection night then took time to pray for the plight of women worldwide, as well as the plight of all mankind. The night ended with a light snack and socializing.
