Remembering Therese

Saturday, July 20th, 2013

On a very hot July 5, 2013 a Memorial mass was celebrated in St. Paul’s Parish Church in Sturgeon, PEI for Sr. Therese MacDonald, of Our Lady’s Missionaries.  The celebrant was Rev. Gerard Chaisson and many of  Therese’s relatives and friends participated in the mass.  St. Paul’s is the beautiful, old country church where Therese as a child, attended mass and received the sacraments. She was brought up a few miles away on Panmure Island, the third child of Edwin and Adele MacDonald.

Sr. Therese passed away on Feb. 26 in Toronto and her funeral was held there.  Because of her many PEI connections plans were made for a Memorial service to give those who could not attend the Toronto funeral  an opportunity to honour her. A special moment in the service was when Sister Mary Deighan, OLM and Andrew MacDonald, Sr Therese’s nephew read a farewell message that Therese had prepared for her loved ones.

Many thanks  to all who participated in the Mass.  To Cecilia for the music. To Paul, Isobel, Priscilla, Krista, Dee, Rita and Carol for the readings. To  Donovan, Kaylee, and Teresa for the Offertory procession.  To Phyllis for distributing communion.  As well, to all who came and made it a special occasion.

Following the Mass a reception was held in the church hall.  At that time the powerpoint presentation, prepared in Toronto for her wake, was available for people to see.  The family is grateful to all who brought food and to the parishioners, Larry, Rosemarie, and Betty who spent the evening making sure that all went smoothly.

Therese can rest peacefully, assured that she is not forgotten in her beloved birthplace.

CNWE Conference & AGM

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

On a Friday afternoon in June, three OLM’s made their way from Toronto to Sudbury to participate in the Catholic Network for Women’s Equality (CNWE) conference and annual general meeting. The weekend held many meaningful moments as we met up with old friends and made new ones. The theme of the conference was “Primacy of Conscience.” We heard input from two speakers: Sr. Louise Akers SC of Cincinnati, and Catherine Cavanagh of Brockville. In small groups we reflected on conscience… how it is formed and informed, becoming a small, still voice within upon which we can rely to guide us forward. At the annual general meeting we heard stories of the breadth and depth of CNWE’s presence across Canada. If you would like to learn more about CNWE, watch this short video:

DUIM (Deepening Understanding for Intercultural Ministry)

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013

The six day program known as DUIM (Deepening Understanding for Intercultural Ministry) and sponsored by the Canadian Churches’ Forum for Global Ministry was held from June 10 to 15 here in Toronto. I was grateful to be one of 13 participants from the Anglican, Presbyterian, United Church and Catholic denominations.

The program held at the Toronto School of Theology building included prayer, input, personal and group reflection and workshop activities around the theme of culture as it relates to ministry. Experienced resource persons presented input and guided reflection and discussion. Facilitators used a variety of methods as “lens” to help us to consider and talk about culture from many perspectives.

All of us who participated agreed that the program’s rich opportunities for deepening our understanding of culture will be an asset in our ministries and would be an excellent experience for anyone working in cross cultural settings.

More information about the DUIM program is available at this link:
