Remembering Fr. John Murphy CSB & Out of the Cold’s 25 Years of Growth

Friday, April 27th, 2012

A  Memorial service and reception for Fr. John Murphy C.S.B. was held at St. Michael’s College on Sunday, April 22, 2012.  It marked the 25th anniversary of the Out of the Cold programme started by Fr. Murphy, Sister Susan Moran, OLM; Rev. John Erb and several students from St Michaels College School.

Out of the Cold’s early history and growth unfolded in the introduction by Mr. Brian O’Malley, a long-time supporter of the programme.  More stories by Sr. Susan recalled how a homeless man, named George, was being fed each day by some of the generous students at SMCS until his tragic death.  This inspired Sister to seek help for other vulnerable people like George.  Rev John Erb offered her and the students a photo supplies store front.  Volunteers offered time and skills and people were welcomed to a weekly warm meal and social gathering.  The store front became too small and Holy Rosary Parish Hall was the new venue. Fr. George Smith, CSB’s reflection compared the programme’s growth from a mustard seed to a fruitful tree.  He also remembered with gratitude Fr. Murphy’s humility and expansive joy with all he met.  These same attributes were praised in Sr. Susan’s life by her niece Dee Dee Taylor Eustace in her “Thank you”.

The OLM’s who attended this event are grateful for the work Sister Susan, Father John Murphy and the St. Michael’s students who bought together the many Churches and countless persons that  have welcomed and continued the “Out of The Cold” programme.

“One Earth, Many Religions”

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

Some of Our Lady’s Missionaries were privileged to attend the Scarboro Missions lecture given by Dr. Heather Eaton, professor of Theology at St. Paul University in Ottawa.

Dr. Eaton’s topic, “One Earth, Many Religions” addressed the challenges religions face in responding to our changing world. Major changes in political, economic and cultural realities and increased knowledge of the sciences especially cosmology affect the way religious beliefs are understood and followed.

Included in Dr. Eaton’s lecture were an emphasis on the importance of training for peace and the suggestion that our understanding of cosmology and evolution lead us to gratitude for our existence rather than awareness of our importance.

In discussing the way young people today differ from previous generations, Dr. Eaton presented the rhizome (e.g. strawberry plant) as an appropriate image of youth’s desire for non-hierarchical networks that embody equity, independence and collaboration.

We were grateful for Dr. Eaton’s clear insightful and inspiring presentation and left Scarboro Missions mindful of her advice that we be critically aware of the values that we accept and allow to influence us.
